Child support for adult children with disabilities improves with passing of Bill 28
Dec 05, 2018
It was a very special day at the Alberta legislature on December 4th, as Bill 28 was passed in to law.
In 2017, Janet Russell, QC, started an action on behalf of Christina Ryan and her daughter Emily, to challenge the validity of a provision of the Alberta Family Law Act under section 15 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the equality provisions. As a result of our advocacy, the matter came to the attention of the government which in turn led to the Bill.
“Janet, I wanted to send you this picture to say thank you! Emily is sitting in Rachel Notley’s seat and Bill 28 passed because of your hard work. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

As of now, people like Christina, who are caring for disabled adult children, can apply for ongoing child support on behalf of their child.
